HUNTSVILLE -- The Lady Bulldogs are making a push for the SWAC Tournament and took a big step toward that goal Friday.

Alabama A&M got goals from Camille Nurse and the eventual game-winner from Daijah DeRamus in a 2-1 win Friday over Southern University.

The win lifted the Lady Bulldogs (2-6 SWAC, 3-13 overall) over Alcorn State in the battle for the final seed in the tournament. Southern is in 11th place at 0-6-1.

Alcorn State dropped a 4-2 decision to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday and fell to 1-6 and 10th place in the 11-team SWAC women's soccer standings. UAPB improved to 2-5-1 with the win and is in eighth place. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament Nov. 2-5, hosted by Prairie View A&M.

The Lady Bulldogs are in ninth place with four points for the two wins; UAPB has five points.

On Sunday, A&M hosts sixth-place Jackson State (2-2-2, six points) at 1 p.m. The Lady Tigers were playing Friday night at Alabama State.

The Lady Bulldogs on Friday came out strong, putting pressure on Southern with much of the play in Southern's half of the field.

Nurse put A&M up 1-0 on her header off Caroline Dyrdek's corner kick at 5:28 of the match.

Nurse, a captain along with Dyrdek, jumped above the congestion in front of the Southern goal and redirected Dyrdek's kick into the net. It was her third goal of the season.

However, the Lady Jags tied the score with less than eight minutes remaining until halftime on Abby Farias's goal.

DeRamus, who now has six goals in seven games for A&M, broke the deadlock on a superb effort late in the second half.

With about 15 minutes left in the match, DeRamus took a pass just a few yards inside the midfield line, split a pair of Southern defenders and beat goalkeeper Kendra Lewis near the top of the box.

The Lady Bulldogs came up empty on a few other scoring chances as they outshot Southern 15-7 and 8-3 in shots on goal.

The second half saw three Jags receive yellow cards and Southern committed 10 fouls to just three for A&M in the final 45 minutes.
