Lady Bulldogs boot Jackson State; keep tourney hopes alive

HUNTSVILLE -- The Alabama A&M women's soccer team seems to have turned the corner.

The Lady Bulldogs have won two in a row and three of their last four matches following Sunday's thrilling 2-1 win over Jackson State.

A&M is now 3-6-0 in the SWAC with nine points, good for seventh place in the conference, just behind Mississippi Valley State. The top eight teams qualify for the SWAC Tournament on Nov. 2-5 at Prairie View A&M.

For the second straight game, the Lady Bulldogs dominated at both ends of the field, outshooting Jackson State 11-8 while goalkeeper Jodi Medina faced just two shots on goal. She had a spectacular save in the second half, leaping to deflect the ball over the goal.

Braejah Washington put A&M on top late in the first half of the physical game which saw 33 fouls called and three yellow cards issued.

On a corner kick at the 40-minute mark, Caroline Dyrdek sent the ball to the front of the JSU goal. Daijah DeRamus let loose with a shot that was stopped by goalkeeper Faith Toennies.

However, Washington got the rebound and fired it back, scoring the go-ahead goal. It was Washington's first goal of the season.

The Lady Tigers clawed back into a tie in the second half on a penalty kick at 54:45 of the match.

But, less than a minute later Alexus Lawson, taking a beautiful through ball from DeRamus, broke in on Toennies, drew her out of position and shot the ball into the lower right corner.

The game-winning score was the third goal of the season for Lawson.

The Lady Bulldogs close out the regular season Thursday when Alabama State visits Bulldog Field. Kickoff is 3 p.m.
