Volleyball Goes 3-2 on the weekend at the SWAC Round Up

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--- The Lady Bulldogs finished the weekend at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round Up Tournament hosted by Alabama State, 3-2. With wins against Prairie View A&M (3-0), Grambling State (3-0), and Southern University (3-0) and losses to Texas Southern (1-3) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3), the Lady Bulldogs played a tremendous tournament.

In the first match up of the tournament with Prairie View A&M, the Lady Bulldogs (11-7,11-3 SWAC) took the match in three (25-16, 25-19, 25-12). In game 2, AAMU was unable to battle against Texas Southern's persistence and consistent defense as they took control of the game. Too many errors left the Lady Bulldogs with a loss, but they fired up to regain the momentum in game 3 as AAMU defeated Grambling State. Terra Brooks led the team with 10 kills and five digs. Courtney Oliver added nine kills, three service aces and two blocks.

In game 4, the Lady Bulldogs faced Southern University. They came out with a positive attitude and high energy to gradually improve their performance each game.  They were able to grab a three-set win over the Jaguars. The game scores were 25-12, 25-17, and 25-18.  Syretha Pride led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 kills and eight blocks. Brooks added 10 digs and nine spikes. Jaelin Gant posted seven kills, and three blocks. Sieck secured 29 assists for the Lady Bulldogs.

In the final match of the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs dropped a close four-set decision to UAPB (16-25, 17-25, 25-26, 17-25). Terra Brooks led AAMU again with 14 kills and 12 digs. Oliver added nine kills followed by Pride's eight. Sieck posted 39 assists and added nine digs. Helena Figueiredo led defensively with 15 digs and Riley Balsmeyer contributed 14.

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on Oct. 29 when they travel to Lorman,MS to face Alcorn State.
