Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Earns Two SWAC Road Wins

HUNTSVILLE--The Alabama A&M volleyball team (13-17, 13-3 SWAC) started the week off on the road in Southwestern Athletic Conference play and they were able to pull away with two victories on back-to-back nights allowing them to inch closer to the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SWAC Volleyball Tournament.

A Lady Bulldogs win or a Texas Southern loss will officially seal the No. 2 seed for AAMU. The Lady Bulldogs are in second place at 13-3 and Texas Southern is in third at 11-5. Both teams have two matches remaining.

On Sunday, AAMU traveled to Lorman, Miss., to face Alcorn State. In the match, Syretha Pride had seven kills with a .700 attack percentage and four blocks to help power the Lady Bulldogs to a 3-0 sweep over the Lady Braves.

The Lady Bulldogs were never challenged in taking the first two sets 25-16 and 25-17.

In the third set, the Lady Bulldogs led 9-6 when two AAMU errors allowed the Lady Braves to cut the lead by one. However, the Lady Bulldogs would pull away with an 8-1 run and Alcorn was unable to battle back, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to secure the 3-0 match victory.

Terra Brooks added four kills and posted eight digs for AAMU while Meredith Sieck contributed 16 assists.

On Monday, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 3-1 come-from-behind win at Mississippi Valley State.

In the first set, The Lady Bulldogs came out strong taking a 12-8 lead over MVSU. The Devilettes responded with a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one. The teams would continue to trade points before seeing a tie at 15. The Devilettes would then take their first lead of the game on a 10-5 run to close out the first set, 25-20 over AAMU.

In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs found their rhythm and dominated offensively.

With A&M holding a 20-10 lead, MVSU went on a 4-0 run but it wasn't enough as kills from Jaelin Gant and Syretha Pride allowed the Lady Bulldogs to close out the set, 25-18.

In the final two sets, AAMU continued to keep their momentum pulling off the third set, 25-20, before sealing the match in set four, 25-15.

Terra Brooks led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 kills and 17 digs. Mikel Coleman added 13 kills followed by Pride's nine. Meredith Sieck dished out 52 assists and Cierra Davis contributed 25 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs they will travel to Alabama State for a rival match Thursday before closing out the regular season Sunday, Nov. 4, as they host Jackson State at 4 p.m. in Elmore Gym.
