Volleyball Clinches SWAC Tournament No.2 Seed despite loss to Alabama State

MONTGOMERY-- The Alabama A&M University volleyball team dropped a straight-set match Thursday at Alabama State, falling three sets to the Lady Hornets. Individual set scores were 20-25, 11-25 and 20-25.

The loss dropped AAMU to 13-18 overall and 13-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The Lady Bulldogs still clinched the No. 2 seed in the 2017 SWAC Volleyball Tournament after Texas Southern lost to Prairie View A&M in four sets on Thursday.

AAMU hosts Jackson State in Sunday's regular-season finale at 4 p.m. in T.M. Elmore Gym.

How it Happened
ASU 3, AAMU 0
The Lady Hornets led early in the first set 8-4, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 9-3 run and cut ASU's deficit by three, 20-17, midway through the first set. Alabama State, however, went on a 5-3 run and went ahead at 24-18, never looking back to take the first set.

Set two saw two tied scores, but Alabama State never trailed. The Lady Bulldogs cut the led by two, 10-8, at one point in the set but the Lady Hornets went on an 8-3 run and continued to dominate offensively to secure the set, 25-11.

Set three saw Alabama State starting off with a 3-0 lead. A kill from Smith and a 3-2 run by the Lady Bulldogs cut the Lady Hornets lead to one, 6-5. The teams continued to trade points when a kill and service ace from Brooks allowed AAMU to get within two at 22-20, but it wasn't enough as a ASU 3-0 run allowed the Lady Hornets to secure the victory.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Terra Brooks who had eight kills with five digs and three aces. Courtney Oliver had six kills and Paris Smith added five kills. Meredith Sieck dished out 25 assists, while Helena Figueiredo had 17 digs followed by nine from Riley Balsmeyer.
