Volleyball Defeats Jackson State 3-1 on Senior Day

HUNTSVILLE – The Alabama A&M University volleyball team celebrated senior night with a 3-1 victory over Jackson State on Sunday afternoon at the Elmore Gym.

  • Senior Courtney Oliver (Detroit, MI) had 12 kills, four blocks and two aces for the Lady Bulldogs
  • Sophomore Terra Brooks (Tampa, FL) notched 12 kills and 12 digs
  • Sophomore Mikel Coleman (Farmington Hills, MI) added 10 kills
  • Freshman setter Meredith Sieck (Ankeny, IA) tallied 40 assists and 12 digs

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Set
The Lady Tigers began the set jumping out ahead of the Lady Bulldogs 11-8 before the Lady Bulldogs scored the next seven points to take the lead,15-11. AAMU built an eight-point lead, 22-14 before Jackson state went on a 3-1 run. Although the Lady Tigers continued to battle, it was not enough as the Lady Bulldogs secured a 25-17 set win.
 
Second Set
Play went back and forth before an 9-1 run from the Lady Tigers gave Jackson State a 22-16 advantage. AAMU scored the next consecutive points but Jackson State only allowed three more points from the Lady Bulldogs as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 25-21 second set victory.
 
Third Set
After the Lady Bulldogs took an early 4-0 lead, the third set resembled the second set with the back and forth play for the majority of the game with multiple ties. Tied at 7-7, AAMU picked up the momentum and never looked back. Despite efforts from Jackson State, the deficit proved to be too much as the Lady Tigers dropped the third set, 25-19.
 
Fourth Set
The Lady Bulldogs looked to keep the momentum going from the third set as they worked on an early 14-9 lead. Jackson State battled hard going on a 4-2 run to cut the lead, 24-17. However, a kill by Coleman sealed the match point for the Lady Bulldogs to win the fourth, 25-17.  
NOTABLES
  • The team recorded six blocks and eight service aces.
  • Prior to tonight's match, four seniors were recognized for their incredible contributions to the Alabama A&M volleyball program.
