Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio. – The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team dropped a 61-53 contest to Ohio University in the 2017-18 season opener on Saturday Afternoon.

Junior Mohamed Sherif paced the Bulldogs with 14 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes of action, while newcomer Arthur Johnson chipped in 12 points including a pair of three-pointers. Johnson also contributed seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Sophomore De'Ederick Petty added eight points followed by Junior Andre Kennedy, who finished with seven points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs fired at a 33.9 percent clip from the floor, only slightly off Ohio's 36.9 percent. AAMU controlled the glass and outrebounded the Bobcats, 46-40, including 37 defensive boards. Ohio had only seven offensive rebounds in the game.

How It Happened…
FIRST HALF | Alabama A&M started off the game with a 4-0 lead over the Bobcats after a layup from Sherif and Evan Wiley. A three-pointer from the Bobcats would contribute to an 8-0 run, allowing Ohio to take a 12-4 lead over the Bulldogs. A layup from Arthur Johnson and three-pointers from Wiley and Jalen Reeder would tie the teams at 12 with 12:26 showing. The teams continued to trade points, seeing ties at 16 and 18. Trailing 23-18, Sherif responded with two layups to cut the Bobcat's lead to one, 23-22, with 4:36 left in the first half.  A 9-0 run later in the half would send Ohio into the locker room at the break with a 10-point lead, 32-22.

SECOND HALF | The Bulldogs struggled offensively at the top of the second half, allowing the Bobcats lead to touch double-digits several times including the biggest lead of the game, 53-34, with 7:18 on the clock. Down by 19, the Bulldogs responded with twelve straight points over the next two minutes, bringing AAMU all the way back, cutting the Bobcats lead to seven (53-46). Ohio responded with a layup to end the run and moments later, Arthur Johnson secured a layup before connecting on a triple to cut the Bobcats lead to four with 1:40 remaining.

Leading 57-53, the Bobcats didn't allow the Bulldogs to get back into the game, hitting 4-of-4 from the free throw line with 30 seconds remaining in the game to end any chance of a AAMU comeback. Ohio finished the game just 8-of-13 from the free throw line but made the ones they needed.

Notables:
- Alabama A&M had 24 turnovers in the game that resulted in 14 Ohio points.
- This was just the second time in school history that AAMU had faced Ohio. The Bobcats now take a 2-0 lead in the all-time series.
- AAMU dominated from the free throw line, shooting 87.5% (7-of-8)
