Men’s Basketball Falls to Samford, 87-68

BIRMINGHAM –The Alabama A&M men's basketball team lost an 87-68 decision to the Samford Bulldogs on Monday night at Pete Hanna Center. With the loss, the AAMU Bulldogs fall to an overall 0-2 record.

Alabama A&M jumped out to a 5-2 lead to start the first half, before Samford responded with a three-pointer to tie the game at five, with 15:51 on the clock. The AAMU Bulldogs answered with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 10-5. The teams would continue to trade points before tying two more times. Tied at 12, Samford went on a 14-3 run on their own, 26-15, at the midway point, before stretching it to 33-19 with five minutes left in the half. Samford was able to maintain a 14-point lead at 37-23 going into the halftime.

Samford began the second half on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 45-23. AAMU responded with a 13-6 run of their own to trim the deficit to 49-34 with 15:21 to play. However, Samford answered with a layup and dunk to jumpstart a 20-11 run over the next four–plus minutes, resulting in a 74-54 lead with 5:31 left to play. From there, Samford cruised to the 19-point victory.

AAMU had three players finish in double figures, led by junior Arthur Johnson's 22 points. Sophomore De'Ederick Petty registered 19 points in the contest, while Junior Andre Kennedy was the last Alabama A&M player to finish in double figures with 11 points.

Wyatt Walker led Samford with 14 points, connecting 5-of-8 from the field. He was one of three Samford players to finish in double-digits.

The AAMU Bulldogs finished the game shooting 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field in the 40-minute contest, while going 7-of-15 (46.7) from behind the three-point line. In comparison, Samford connected on 50 percent (32-of-64) from the floor and 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from beyond the arc. Alabama A&M also committed 28 turnovers which resulted in a big 22-12 Samford advantage points-off-turnovers.

Alabama A&M will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as they return to the road to face Alabama in another tough non-conference matchup. The game will broadcast on the SEC Network.
