AAMU Men’s Track & Field Wraps Up 2017-18 Indoor Opener

HUNTSVILLE--- The Alabama A&M track & field men's team opened its 2017-18 indoor track and field campaign by competing at both the Birmingham-Southern Indoor Icebreaker and the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener.

"Having these two meets prior to Christmas Break gave an opportunity to rate the progression of the men's team from their practice sessions this pre-season," Alabama A&M head coach LaShaunda Jones shared following the opener. "It also aided in determining what events the athletes would compete in for the upcoming indoor season."

At Vanderbilt, Alex Ward finished 17th place in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:02.43 and he posted a fourth place finish in the 200 with a time of 22.07 at Birmingham-Southern.

"This weekend was an opportunity to see where I'm standing in my training and it showed what I need to work on a little more," Ward said. "For the most it was a great way to open my season. As far as the men as a whole, we see we have potential on our team and we just have to grind harder to get where we need to be to be on top."

Leroy Campbell finished ninth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:59.08 at Birmingham Southern. In the 400-meter dash, Campbell placed first in his heat with 50.23 on the clock and 20th overall at Vanderbilt. "This past weekend was a great way to start the season off. Coming in faster than the beginning of last year shows that the hard work I've been putting in my preseason has put me in a good position to do well," Campbell said.

"Overall, the meet was a great experience for me and the guys, it gave us chance to see where we are and what we need to work on," Campbell said. "I'm just excited to see what else the coaching staff has for my fellow bulldogs & I to reach our goal for the season."

For the Bulldogs, the 4x400-meter relay combination of Campbell, Ward, Tre' Williams and Amir Ali grabbed a sixth-place finish. The unit ran a 3:20.76 mark.

"There is a significant difference on the men's side from the effort and the determination that this team has this year compared to the previous years," Coach Jones said. "One thing that stuck out at the competitions this weekend, was the huge amount of support and motivation that the men displayed throughout the meets.  I am extremely proud that they are bringing that Bulldog Spirit back to the track and the field."
