HUNTSVILLE -- In a hotly contested soccer match, Winthrop defeated the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 Sunday.

It was the season opener and the Alabama A&M head coaching debut for Emanuel Stephens.

"Hotly contested" refers to the temperature - the heat index was around 100 degrees - and the play of both teams.

The Lady Bulldogs played well on the defensive side of the ball but Stephens said A&M needs to improve offensively.

A&M had just one shot on goal and that came from Ayanna Gooden early in the first half.

Gooden took a pass from Braejah Washington and her point-blank shot was stopped by Winthrop goalkeeper Kelly Horan.

Freshman keeper Jodi Medina had five saves for the Lady Bulldogs on seven shots on goal. Twice she was hit by Winthrop attackers as she played a physical style in the net.

With about 14 minutes left in the game, Medina was going for the ball and collided with Winthrop's Lauryn Jennings and both players lay on the ground.

Meanwhile, the action continued and Winthrop's Gabi Hull, who had a goal for the Eagles, fired a shot at the open net but hit the right post. The Lady Bulldogs were able to clear the ball and avoid a score.

Defender Lauren Saunders was stellar on the back line, blocking several shots, including back-to-back shots late in the game.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action this weekend with a pair of games in South Carolina. They visit The Citadel on Friday and USC Upstate next Sunday.

A&M's next home match in Sept. 3 when Austin Peay visits for a 1 p.m. match.
