Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker against Texas Southern, 58-56

HUNTSVILLE—The Alabama A&M men's basketball team staged a second-half comeback against Texas Southern in Elmore Gym Saturday evening, but fell short as they suffered a heartbreaking 58-56 loss.

The loss dropped Alabama A&M to 2-19 overall and 2-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

10 different Bulldogs scored, but none reached double digits. Mohamed Sherif led the Bulldogs on the scoring side with eight points and Andre Kennedy led the team with 11 rebounds.

Texas Southern saw three Tigers in double digits, which was led by Jerry Perry and Donte Clark, who each had 14 points respectively followed by Brian Carey who added 12 points.  

The Tigers (5-16, 5-3 SWAC) led 33-27 at the break. They opened the second half with a 2-0 run before the Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 37 with 16:09 on the clock. The teams would trade points to tie at 39 before TSU took a 49-44 lead.

With 10:35 remaining in the game, Evan Wiley shot back-to-back jumpers to bring the Bulldogs back within one, before a jumper from Kennedy would give the Bulldogs their first lead of the half.

Down 51-50, Texas Southern hit a layup with 4:41 on the clock to retake the lead. The teams traded leads over the next minute with TSU taking a four-point lead, 58-54, with 1:16 left to play.

Marcus Merriweather was sent to the free throw line with 55 seconds on the clock and brought the Bulldogs back within two of the Tigers. With 26 seconds left to play, TSU missed a jumper and an attempted layup from Julian Walters was unsuccessful. Both teams fought for the rebound before Arthur Johnson's Jumper fell short with four seconds on the clock, giving the Tigers the victory.

Alabama A&M shot 39.6% (21-of-53) from the field, including 33.3% (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 40.9% (9-of-22) from the free throw line. Texas Southern was 42% (21-of-50) from the floor and 30.8% (4-of-13) from the three-point line and 63.2% (12-of-19) from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs outrebounded Texas Southern, 42-to-26.

The Bulldogs will host Prairie View A&M on Monday in Elmore Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
