Gomez sends Alabama A&M past Arkansas-Pine Bluff in overtime

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Valery Gomez threw her hands up the moment she kicked the ball.

The Alabama A&M sophomore knew the outcome in an instant — along with the stakes of the moment.

And nothing was going to stop the celebration.

For good reason.

Gomez took a pass from Ayanna Gooden and put the biggest goal of her collegiate career into the back of the net as Alabama A&M topped Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2-1 with a golden goal in overtime Sunday afternoon in a SWAC contest.

Gomez's goal was significant. The moment the ball hit the back of the net, everyone on the field knew.

Several of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff players on the field immediately fell to the turf in disappointment.

But for Alabama A&M, it was a moment of celebration.

In the final home contest of the season — and on senior day — Alabama A&M (5-10-1, 5-4 in SWAC) won a key conference match in dramatic fashion, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to claim one of the top four seeds in the SWAC tournament.

"That was a great finish and a huge win," Alabama A&M coach Emanuel Stephens said. "Our players responded in a tough situation in a major way."

It was a flurry of a finish.

Early in the match, not much went Alabama A&M's way. Arkansas-Pine Bluff controlled possession and seemed to have momentum after the Golden Lions took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a Karissa Fenwick goal.

Alabama A&M closed the match strong.

After the program honored its two seniors, Julie Duran and Lauren Saunders at halftime for the senior day ceremony, Alabama A&M delivered a memorable finish.

Tehya Beadles tied the contest late in the second half on a goal from Gomez, and a few minutes later, the Bulldogs won on Gomez's golden goal
in overtime.

Jodi Medina finished with five saves for Alabama A&M.

Alabama A&M travels to rival Alabama State on Thursday for the final regular-season match.
