Lady Bulldogs Clinch Regular Season Title and No. 1 Seed Despite Loss to Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE-- The Alabama A&M University volleyball team clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season Title and the No. 1 seed despite a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Alabama State on Thursday evening in front of a full house at Elmore Gym.

The Regular Season Title and No. 1 Seed
Alabama State (18-17, 15-2 SWAC) entered the contest needing a win to still have a chance at the top seed in the SWAC Women's Volleyball Tournament. However, with the match going to five sets – AAMU (20-13, 16-1 SWAC) defeated ASU in four sets earlier during the season – the league tie-breaker rules allowed the Lady Bulldogs to clinch the regular-season crown and the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament.

The Lady Hornets have clinched the No. 2 seed with the victory.

The Match
After Alabama State took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17, AAMU battled to tie the match at two sets apiece. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Bulldogs used an 8-1 run early in the third set to set the tone to bring the match to a fourth set.

The fourth set was tied at two points when AAMU scored five-straight to take a 7-3 lead. The game continued to go back and forth with the Lady Hornets eventually bringing the game within two. Down 22-24, the Lady Hornets brought the game within one with a service ace before the Lady Bulldogs won on a Jaelin Gant kill.

ASU won all of the first five points of the fifth set, but the Lady Bulldogs joined ASU on the board with a kill from Alana Cox and Terra Brooks. Down 7-2, Brooks added another kill for AAMU before Alabama State turned the tide to finish the match on an 8-5 run to secure the victory.

Jaelin Gant posted a match-high 24 kills with nine digs and Terra Brooks added 21 kills. Megan Evans dished out 46 assists and added five kills and Mine Centinoz contributed 19 digs.

AAMU will travel to Jackson, MS to take on host Jackson State on Sunday, Nov. 4 before closing out the regular season on Monday, Nov. 5 at Southern Mississippi.
