Alabama A&M falls to Alabama State in SWAC women's volleyball championship

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Alabama A&M's tournament run fell slightly short of its championship goal.

Alabama State used a fast start in the opening sets to top rival Alabama A&M 3-1 Sunday afternoon in the SWAC women's volleyball tournament championship match.

Alabama State (23-17) defeated Alabama A&M 25-13, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19.

For top-seeded Alabama A&M (23-15), this only was the second loss this season to a conference opponent. Both losses against SWAC opponents were against Alabama State.

Alabama State swung momentum in its favor early. The Hornets used a 9-3 scoring run to take the first set, and then used a 9-2 run in the second set to build a 2-0 cushion.

With its championship hopes on the line, Alabama A&M responded in the third set when Jaelin Gant delivered a powerful kill to stop an Alabama State scoring run.

Alana Cox led Alabama A&M with 10 kills, while Terra Brooks had eight kills and 16 digs. Gant finished with seven kills and nine digs, while Megan Evans had 25 assists.

But the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Alabama State closed out the fourth set with a 9-3 run to claim the tournament championship.

Bayle Bennett led Alabama State with 20 kills, four service aces and 11 digs.
