Women's Volleyball season ends in NIVC at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Alabama A&M (23-16) fell in straight sets to Clemson (18-14) Thursday evening at Littlejohn Coliseum by scores of 25-9, 25-19, 25-15. The contest was a part of the opening round of play during the Women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

Alana Cox led with 10 kills, hitting .304 and adding six digs. Jaelin Gant added five kills. Maya Evans and Valencia Wilson each figured in on four blocks. Megan Evans dished out 14 assists, and Gant and Terra Brooks collected six digs a piece.

Clemson outhit AAMU .391-.107 in the match, which began with a 11-2 run in favor of the host Tigers as Brooke Bailey and Solei Thomas each put down a pair of kills to spark the fast start, one that ultimately allowed Clemson to coast to a first set victory.

The Tigers appeared poised for a similar performance in set two as Crystal Childs helped key a 12-3 run to open the frame, but Alabama A&M stormed back to make a game of it as defensive stops by Ma. Evans and Wilson allowed the Lady Bulldogs to stay in striking distance. However, Alabama A&M was unable to overtake Clemson late and faded down the stretch of set three, bringing their season to a close.

Bailey led Clemson with 11 kills, hitting .384. Gabby Easton dished out 41 assists. Clemson had six players notch at least five kills or more.

The Lady Bulldogs' aspirations for next season appear bright, as the team is set to return nearly every offensive impact player from this year's 2018 league regular-season titlist. Gant, Brooks, the Evans duo and Cox are all set to be back on the Hill next season, giving AAMU three players with 300+ kills on the season along with the reigning 2018 Co-Player of the Year (Ma. Evans) and Setter of the Year (Me. Evans).
