Men's Basketball Falls to Southern, 60-50

HUNTSVILLE –The Alabama A&M men's basketball team fell to Southern, 60-50, on Monday evening in Elmore Gym.  

The Bulldogs (2-25,2-12 SWAC) will return to the court this weekend, when the team travels to Texas for a two-game road trip against Texas Southern (Feb. 24) and Prairie View A&M (Feb. 26) to wrap up their road schedule.  

 The Maroon and White quickly fell behind 4-0 before Arthur Johnson would lay one in to get the Bulldogs on the board four minutes into the game. Johnson hit a free throw to chip away at the Southern lead and close to within one.  
 
The game went back-and-forth for several minutes before the Jaguars went on a 6-2 run late in the first half to take a 33-23 lead on the Bulldogs. Alabama A&M was able to limit it to an eight-point deficit, 33-25, at the break.
 
Southern opened the second half offensively strong as they took a 16 point lead, 46-30, six minutes into the half. The Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 run to chip away at the Jaguars lead closing it to six with 7:38 left in the game.
 
Over the last several minutes, Southern's deficit extended back to double-digits to give the Jaguars the 60-50 victory.
 
In what was a low-scoring, defensive game, the Bulldogs won the turnover battle, 15-10. The Bulldogs were out-rebounded by Southern, 46-34.
 
Johnson finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Houston added 11 points, which included three from behind the arc. 
 
On the night, Alabama A&M (30.5%) and Southern (39.7%) both struggled from the floor. Jared Sam led the Jaguars with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks.
