Bulldogs Fall to Texas Southern, 106-71

BATON ROUGE – The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team fell to Texas Southern, 106-71, Saturday evening at H&PE Arena in Houston, TX.

The Bulldogs fall to 2-26 overall and 2-13 in the SWAC, while Texas Southern improves to 9-19 overall and 9-6 in league play.

The first half saw both teams trading baskets, which saw two ties. Tied at 16, a free throw from Andre Kennedy would give the Bulldogs a 17-16 lead with 11:37 on the clock. Texas Southern responded with a 21-2 run to take a 15-point lead. The Tigers led 50-40 at the break.

In the second half, the Bulldogs cut it to 58-50 early but the Tigers took off on a 27-8 run after that, to go up 85-58 on a Bruce 3-pointer with 7:23 left. The Tigers continued to extend their lead to secure the win.

AAMU was led by the 22 of Andre Kennedy, while Arthur Johnson had 15 points and Jalen Reeder chipped in 12 points.  

Four Texas Southern players were in double figures with Derrick Bruce hitting nine threes in scoring 35 points. Demontrae Jefferson added 28 points and 10 rebounds, Donte Clark had 21 points and Cainan McClelland added 10 points.  

Texas Southern shot 39-of-63 overall from the field (61.9 %), making 16-of-25 from the arc (64%). The Tigers were 12-of-14 from the free throw line (85.7%).

AAMU shot 50 percent for the game (29-of-58) and they were 8-of-18 (44.4%) from the arc.

The Bulldogs were out rebounded, 31-24.

The Bulldogs will close out their road schedule on Monday, Feb. 26 as they face Prairie View A&M.
