Kennedy pours in 26, Alabama A&M tops Southern

HUNTSVILLE — Gerron Scissum did not hesitate.

Watching as the basketball bounced off the back of the rim, the Alabama A&M forward made sure a crucial opportunity was not missed, grabbing the rebound and dunking the putback.

The Alabama A&M bench — and just about everyone else in Elmore Gymnasium — were immediately on their feet.
For good reason.

Scissum's putback sealed an exciting finish as Alabama A&M held off Southern 68-62 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men's basketball game.

"I felt the energy in the building the moment I let go of the rim," Scissum said. "It was loud. Everyone was on their feet. That's a great feeling."

It was a moment Alabama A&M needed.

In recent weeks, close games against conference opponents have mostly gone against the Bulldogs.

Not this time — in front of a loud and energetic home crowd.

Alabama A&M (3-17, 2-4 in SWAC) led the majority of the game, taking a 38-35 cushion into halftime and never trailing after the break.

"This was an important game for our team," Scissum said. "We needed this. To have been on the other end of a few like this, this was a win our team needed to pull out.

"Getting to celebrate in the locker room was great. It's exactly what we needed as we move into the second half of our conference schedule."

For Alabama A&M, once again, Andre Kennedy was a significant factor.

The 6-foot-7 junior, who has been tabbed by his teammates as "Mr. Double-Double" lived up to the hype, recording his fourth double-double since conference play began.

Kennedy led Alabama A&M with a season-high 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.

Tre Todd finished with 14 points for Alabama A&M, while Jalen Reeder scored 11. Scissum added eight points with five rebounds.

With Kennedy dominating the paint, Alabama A&M built a double-figure lead in the second half.

But Southern (3-16, 2-5) tried to make a run at the lead, pulling within two in the game's final minute.
Southern could get no closer.

Scissum dunked a putback with 12 seconds remaining that stretched the lead to a two-possession game, and Kennedy drained a pair of clutch free throws to seal the win.

Sidney Umude and Aaron Ray each led Southern with 17 points.

Alabama A&M hosts Alcorn State on Monday.

"This was a good night for our team," Scissum said. "Everyone stepped up and played well. There was a lot of energy in the building, and we fed off that. Now it's time to build on this an put something special together in the second half of conference play."
