Southern holds off Alabama A&M women's basketball

Box Score HUNTSVILLE — Courtney Parson did not let the opportunity go to waste.

With a chance to stretch Southern's lead to a two-possession game in the final seconds, Parson stepped to the foul line and drained a pair of clutch free throws.

Brittany Rose poured in 16 points as Southern held off Alabama A&M 54-50 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

Parson's free throws at the end of regulation stopped a furious Alabama A&M comeback bid.

After leading the majority of the first half, Alabama A&M (8-9, 3-3 in SWAC) struggled from the field in the third quarter as Southern (9-9, 6-1) built a 16-point cushion.

But Alabama A&M rallied back in the fourth quarter. Nigeria Jones made a 3-pointer that pulled Alabama A&M within nine, and with about minute remaining in the game Tierra Dark made a jump shot that pulled the Bulldogs within two.

Dark led Alabama A&M with 11 points, while Jones added nine.

Alabama A&M could get no closer.

Parson made a pair of free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining that stretched Southern's lead to four, sealing Alabama A&M's fate.

Jaden Towner finished with 12 points for Southern.
