Lady Bulldog Volleyball Sweeps Two Conference Foes in Wins over Mississippi Valley and Alcorn State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ After Sunday's three-set victory over Mississippi Valley, Alabama A&M volleyball earned their third straight conference sweep in the win over Alcorn State Monday night.
 
The Lady Bulldogs (10-11, 6-1 in SWAC) won the first two sets by a score of 25-19, before finishing with a strong final set to win 25-11, and end the match.
 
The team's .352 hitting percentage is its fourth highest percentage for a match on the season.
 
Individually, junior Maya Evans led the offense with 10 kills, with her .692 hitting percentage bested only by twin sister Megan Evans who had a perfect percentage and finished with 24 assists and a season-high seven kills. Senior Terra Brooks also contributed on both ends, tallying eight kills and 11 digs along with two aces on the night.

  • Set One (Alabama A&M 25, Alcorn State 19): Alabama A&M began the match trailing 0-3 before going on a three-point swing to tie the game early. The two teams went back and forth, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead. After Alcorn State tied the game at 13, Alabama A&M began to pull away with a five straight unanswered points, and finishing the match on a 11-6 run to win 25-19.
  • Set Two (Alabama A&M 25, Alcorn State 19): Alabama A&M opened the match trailing again, finding themselves down 5-1 before eventually tying the game at eleven on a kill by senior Karen Asprilla. After runs by both teams, the Lady Bulldogs began to pull away on four straight points to make the game 21-15 before finishing the set 25-19.
  • Set Three (Alabama A&M 25, Alcorn State 11): The momentum carried into the third set, with Alabama A&M starting off strong opening with a 10-4 advantage. The strong start carried on throughout the set as the Lady Bulldogs found themselves with a 16-10 lead, and then scored eight unanswered to take a commanding 24-10 advantage before finishing the match 25-11 to cap the sweep.

Alabama A&M won the first two sets by a score of 25-22, before finishing the final set 25-15 to complete the sweep on Sunday night.
 
The team displayed a balanced offensive arsenal, as four players had five or more kills.
 
Individually, junior Maya Evans led the offense with 13 kills, on a .550 hitting percentage. Seniors Terra Brooks and Jaelin Gant both added eight kills of their own, and combined for 10 digs. Junior Jayla Norman also added five kills and added eight digs, while Megan Evans earned another 30 assists night (31 total).

  • Set One (Alabama A&M 25, Mississippi Valley State 22): Alabama A&M scored the first four points of the set before finding the game tied 7-7. After runs by both teams to fine the score back tied at 17-17, the Lady Bulldogs eventually gained a 24-19 lead before finishing the set 25-22.
  • Set Two (Alabama A&M 25, Mississippi Valley State 22): The second set was more of the same, as both teams fought back and forth for a majority of the set, with no team gaining an advantage of more than a three-point lead for the majority of the set. With the game tied at 15, Alabama A&M broke the game open with five unanswered points to gain a 20-15 advantage. Mississippi Valley fought back to try to overcome the deficit, however could not recover as the Bulldogs finished the set 25-22 again.
  • Set Three (Alabama A&M 25, Mississippi Valley State 15): The third set found Alabama A&M climbing out to a dominating 12-4 lead. That momentum carried them on through the remainder of the set and match as the 25-15 set three victory completed the second sweep of the weekend and third straight conference sweep overall for the Bulldogs.
