Alabama A&M men's tennis tops Prairie View in SWAC Roundup

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Alabama A&M men's tennis team opened the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Roundup strong, topping Prairie View A&M 4-1 Friday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.

Prairie View beat Alabama A&M 4-3 in the women's match.

"This was a nice start to the conference (schedule)," Alabama A&M tennis coach Willis Mbandi said. "Our players gave us a lot of positives to build on."

In the men's contest, Alabama A&M won Nos. 2-5 singles.

Fermin Ruiz-Gespo won 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles for Alabama A&M, w hile Rodrigo Arana Rios won 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Shakir Elvin won in No. 3 singles 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Rodrigo Arana Rios took No. 4 singles 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.

Because of inclement weather, the men's teams did not play doubles matches.

In the women's match, Alabama A&M won Nos. 2-4 singles.

Jasmine Boyd won No. 2 singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Anita Bozhko won No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Rida Hhalid won No. 3 singles 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
