Alabama A&M falls to Prairie View in SWAC quarterfinals

Box Score PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Shala Dobbins paced Prairie View A&M with 14 points as the Panthers held off Alabama A&M 69-56 Tuesday night in the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament.

Chasing its first-ever SWAC tournament title, Alabama A&M showed up at Prairie View inspired, and the seventh-seeded Lady Bulldogs challenged the tournament's second seed for the entire game.

Prairie View led by two after three periods and needed a couple of late runs to put the game away.

Elexis Evans led Alabama A&M (13-17) with 15 points and four rebounds. Kenya Pye and Tierra Dark each added 11 points.

Prairie View took an eight-point lead into halftime, tying the score at 44 apiece by the end of the third period.

Dobbins and Artavia Ford were clutch for Prairie View late. The duo, who are the Panthers' two leading scorers, provided key buckets in the fourth period that were the difference.

Dobbins led Prairie View with 14 points, and Ford added 13.
