Volleyball Travels North to Compete in Wofford Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. __ Alabama A&M volleyball heads north this weekend to compete in the annual Wofford Tournament featuring Gardner Webb, host-team Wofford and North Carolina A&T.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-4) face a pair of matches on Friday, going up against Gardner-Webb (1-5) at 1 p.m. and Wofford (1-6) at 7 p.m. in the Richardson Indoor Stadium. Alabama A&M will then face North Carolina A&T (0-7) in the their final match of the tournament Saturday at 9 a.m.

A&M NOTES
  • Three Lady Bulldogs are averaging at least a pair of kills per set, including Alana Cox (2.84 k/set), Maya Evans (2.47 k/set) and Jaelin Gant (2.37 k/set).
  • Alabama A&M also has four players averaging at least a pair of digs per set, including Maci Battle who is third in the conference with 3.94 digs per set, Jaelin Gant (2.74 d/set), Jayla Norman (2.11 d/set) and Megan Evans (2.05 d/set).
  • Megan Evans leads the Soutwestern Athletic Conference with 164 assists and 8.63 assists per set.
  • Alabama A&M leads the SWAC in hitting percentage (mininum of 10 games played), and has two players in the top ten in hitting percentage, including Alana Cox (1st with .465) and Maya Evans (3rd with .381).
OPPONENT NOTES
  • Gardner Webb dropped matches against Memphis and UT Martin before defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff in straight sets this past Saturday afternoon to gain their first win of the season.
  • Wofford split matches against UNC Wilmington and North Carolina Central before sweeping Presbyterian College on Tuesday night.
  • North Carolina A&T is coming off losses to both Eastern Kentucky and Charleston Southern in straight sets.
LAST MATCH
Alabama A&M took a tough loss to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in straight sets, 18-25, 19-25, 24-26 on Saturday in Carbondale, Illinois, where they finished with a .152 attack percentage, second lowest of the season.

Jaelin Gant led the team with 12 total points(nine kills, two blocks, two aces) and Maya Evans added nine kills and four blocks. Megan Evans tallied 19 assists for the Lady Bulldogs, while Maci Battle recorded a team high 12 digs.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M will play in their home opener in 2019, hosting Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Elmore Gymnasium. The 6 o'clock p.m. tip-off is scheduled as a "Maroon Out."
