SWAC Play Opens Saturday as Alabama A&M Men’s Basketball Travels to Take on Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. __ The Alabama A&M men's basketball team enters Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a road contest in Louisiana against Grambling on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. It marks the second time in three years the Bulldogs open league play on the road at Grambling.

This is the third time the two programs have met under the helm of current head coach Dylan Howard, and the second in the Hobdy Assembly Center. The teams split the series last season, with each school winning in their home arenas.


About A&M
  • The Bulldogs enter SWAC play after falling to Power five opponent Notre Dame last Sunday 82-56.
  • Alabama A&M comes into conference play leading the SWAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.07), while currently being second in three-pointers made per game (6.8) and free throw percentage (.717).
  • Freshman Cameron Alford is fourth in the SWAC in scoring (14.4) and field goal percentage (.447), while also being top ten in assists per game (2.3), defensive rebounds (4.4) and minutes played (29.6).
  • Five different players average at least seven points or more. Alford tops the team 14.8 per game, while Garrett Hicks is second at 10.2, followed by TJ Parham (8.3), Brandon Miller (7.1) and Jalen Johnson (7.0).

About Grambling
  • Grambling comes in leading the SWAC in scoring offense (80.2), scoring defense (72.2), scoring margin, field goal percentage (.480) and field goal percentage defense (.426)
  • The Tigers have three players scoring in double figures. DeVante Jackson leads the team at 14.5 points, Ivy Smith Jr. averages 11.3, and Kelton Edwards is third at 10.0 per game.
  • Donte' Jackson enters his third season with the and has a 40-37 record with the program. In his first season, Jackson led Grambling to their first regular season conference title since 1988-89 and was also voted SWAC Coach of the Year.

Alabama A&M will continue their conference opening road trip as they continue on to face Jackson State on Monday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to play next weekend.
