Men's Basketball Falls to Texas Southern in Shootout

Box Score HUNTSVILLE __ Senior Evan Wiley finished with a season-high 22 points and nine rebounds as the Bulldogs had three players in double digits, however could not pull out the tough win over conference opponent Texas Southern on Saturday night.

Garrett Hicks recorded 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Cameron Alford added 14 points, including a 10-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Lead guard Cameron Tucker finished with a career-high 10 assists in the loss.


First Half
  • Wiley opened the scoring in the contest with a three pointer on the Bulldogs' first possession.
  • The Tigers went on to score six unanswered to take the lead, before Wiley's second three of the half to tie the game at six.
  • The teams found themselves tied again at 10 at the 16-minute mark of the first half, before A&M went scored five unanswered of their own to reclaim the lead.
  • After falling down 17-11, Texas Southern battled back for another tie at 17 with 13 minutes to play, and again at 19 with 12 minutes to play in the half.
  • The two teams continued to battle and trade baskets, with the Bulldogs stretching their lead back to three at 29-26 after a three-pointer by Garrett Hicks and a pair of free throws by Cameron Tucker with just over six minutes to go in the half.
  • Texas Southern responded to tie the ball game before Evan Wiley made his fourth long range score of the half to reclaim the three-point lead, 32-29.
  • After the two opponents continued to battle and found the ball game tied once more at 39, the Tigers claimed a five-point lead with just under two minutes to go and finished the half up 44-41.
Second Half
  • The Bulldogs came out of intermission and tied the game on the first possession of the second half on a fifth three-pointer by Wiley and took a 46-44 lead on a basket by EJ Williams in the paint.
  • The Tigers responded with a 6-0 run over the next three minutes of play and headed into the first media time out of the half up 52-46.
  • The Tigers continued to stretch their lead as they went up nine with 15 minutes to play, and pushed it to 11 at 58-47 two possessions later.
  • Still controlling the momentum, Texas Southern continued their run and went up 66-54 before a three by Garrett Hicks brought the deficit back to within single digits with 8:19 to play in the game.
  • The Bulldogs came out of the under eight media time out to pull the game within six points, and closed it to two at 68-66 after five unanswered points from Hicks with just under six minutes to play.
  • After making another defensive stop, the Bulldogs used two free throws to tie the game at 68, before finding themselves again down by a single point at 71-70 heading into the final media timeout of the game.
  • The matchup remained close througouth the last few minutes, however a three-pointer by the Tigers with 1:15 to play gained final control of the game, as the Bulldogs fell by a final of 82-73.
Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M starters: Cameron Tucker, Garrett Hicks, Cameron Alford, Evan Wiley, EJ Williams
  • The Bulldogs shot 20-for-54 (37 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the three-point line and 23-for-28 from the charity stripe (82.1­ percent).
  • Texas Southern won the battle in the paint, outscoring Alabama A&M in the lane 32-18 in the contest.
  • The Tigers also won the rebounding battle 41-29. The Bulldogs grabbed only six offensive rebounds, and scored five second chance points. Texas Southern scored six second chance points off of just six offensive boards of their own.
  • The Bulldog bench outscored the Tiger bench 13-9.
  • Turnovers: Both teams took care of the ball in the contest, with A&M scoring nine points off of 10 forced turnovers, while Texas Southern scored seven points off of just five Bulldog turnovers.
Up Next
The Bulldogs play the second of the two-game home stand as they host Prairie View on Feb 3 at 7:30 p.m. before hitting the road next weekend to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 8 and Mississippi Valley on Feb. 10.
