Harper pours in 19 as women's basketball runs past Mississippi Valley

ITTA BENA, Miss. __ DeShawna Harper was on her game.

For the Alabama A&M women's basketball team, that's a good thing.

Harper poured in 19 points as Alabama A&M ran past Mississippi Valley State 75-45 Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game.

Alabama A&M (11-11, 7-4 in SWAC) now has won three-straight conference games as it prepares for next week's trip to rival Alabama State.

At Mississippi Valley (2-20, 1-10), Alabama A&M looked like a team poised to make a run for one of the SWAC's top postseason seeds.

Following the season's trend, Harper was good from the perimeter, draining four 3-pointers while helping Alabama A&M build a comfortable cushion.

Alabama A&M led 38-20 at halftime and stretched its cushion to 21 by the end of the third period.

The Bulldogs also continued another of this season's trends:

Dominating the boards.

Alabama A&M finished with 47 rebounds to Mississippi Valley's 35.

Dariana Lewis finished with 15 points and four rebounds for Alabama A&M, while Nigeria Jones had nine points and four rebounds. Tierra Dark, Lazurea Saunders and Je'Naiya Davis each added six points.

  • Alabama A&M played most of the game with a comfortable lead. The Bulldogs used a 12-3 run late in the first period to take a double-figure lead, and Mississippi Valley never was able to pull back within single digits.
  • Strong ball movement was a major factor for Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs recorded 20 assists.
  • Not only did Alabama A&M dominate the boards, but the Bulldogs also gave themselves plenty of second-chance opportunities, recording 15 offensive rebounds.
