Women's Basketball tops Arkansas-Pine Bluff on road

PINE BLUFF, Ark. __ Good things come in pairs.

Or better yet, doubles.

At least that's the case for Dariauna Lewis.

The Alabama A&M forward recorded her eighth double-double of the season as the Bulldogs topped Arkansas-Pine Bluff 65-52 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

Lewis controlled the boards while DeShawna Harper and Nigeria Jones got hot on the perimeter, and the result was a commanding early lead that Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-15) could not overcome.

After falling behind by five in the opening minutes, Alabama A&M (10-11, 6-4 in SWAC) closed out the first period with a 16-3 offensive run to build a 13-point cushion.

Alabama A&M led 39-19 at halftime.

Strong shooting from the perimeter was a major factor.

Alabama A&M made five of its six 3-pointers  in the first half, with Harper and Jones each making a pair. Tierra Dark also made a shot from beyond the arc.

Harper led Alabama A&M in scoring with 16 points, making 3-of-7 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Jones finished with 12 points while Lewis scored 15 points with 10 rebounds.

Jasmine Stanley added nine points with seven rebounds for Alabama A&M.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff tried to make a late run, pulling within 12 in the final minutes of the fourth period.

The hole was too deep to overcome.

Jones and Lewis made back-to-back buckets with less than two minutes remaining to stave off the Arkansas-Pine Bluff momentum and close out the game.

 Post-Game Notes

  • Alabama A&M starters: Lazurea Saunders, Dariauna Lewis, Jameica Cobb, Nigeria Jones and Tierra Dark.
  • Rebounding continues to be a strength for Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs finished with 40 rebounds, which is the 13th time this season the team has surpassed the 40-rebound mark.
  • Even though Alabama A&M won by double-figures, it was far from a flawless night in Pine Bluff. The Bulldogs turned the ball over a season-high 23 times and only made 7 of 13 attempts from the free-throw arc.
  • Harper continues to shine for Alabama A&M. Saturday was the fifth time the junior guard reached double figures in scoring her past six games.
