Men's Basketball holds off Arkansas-Pine Bluff for key road win

PINE BLUFF, Ark. __ Resilience.

For the Alabama A&M men's basketball team, that is an important word.

On Saturday night in Pine Bluff, Ark., that showed.

Alabama A&M staved off a furious Arkansas-Pine Bluff comeback in the second half, topping the Golden Lions 58-54 for a Southwestern Athletic Conference win.

In a contest with heavy postseason stakes, drama was plentiful.

Alabama A&M (6-15, 3-8 in SWAC) raced out to a commanding lead in the first half, only to see it fade away after halftime. The Bulldogs led by 15 before the break.

But after the halftime intermission, Arkansas-Pine Bluff raced back, taking a 43-32 lead with about four minutes remaining in the game.

For Alabama A&M, foul trouble was an issue. The Bulldogs had three starters with three fouls by the opening minutes of the second half.

But in clutch time, everyone was available, and star players made big plays.

Freshman guard Cameron Alford scored five of his game-high points in the final four minutes, helping Alabama A&M use a 10-3 run to take the lead for good.

Alford led Alabama A&M with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Cameron Tucker scored 10. EJ Williams finished with nine points and five rebounds.

Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M starters: Garrett Hicks, Cameron Alford, Evan Wiley, Cameron Tucker, TJ Parham.
  • This was a game of runs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff won most statistical categories, with the exception of two: Fouls and free throws made. UAPB committed 27 fouls compared to AAMU's 21, and AAMU made 20 of 31 from the charity stripe compared to UAPB's 14 of 24.
  • When the game was on the line, Alford shined. Late in the game, the freshman guard found gaps in the UAPB zone defense and got to the line, where he has been consistently good for most of the season.
