Lady Bulldogs Drop Second Game in a Row, Fall On Road to Prairie View

Box Score PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS __ In the final true road game of the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs fell in a tough battle to the Prairie View Lady Panthers, 60-53, on Monday night in the Williams Nicks Building.
 
Junior Nigeria Jones led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists on the night, while sophomore Dariauna Lewis added 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.


Quarter-by-Quarter
  • Alabama A&M started the ball game by scoring on their first possession and found themselves up 11-0 at the first media timeout with 5:55 to play in the opening quarter. The Lady Panthers got on the board with a free throw at the four-minute mark, and scored again on a three plus the foul to make the score 13-5 with 3:37 to play. Prairie View continued their push to reduce the lead, cutting the lead to 13-10 with just over a minute to go before Jameica Cobb sank two free throws at the close of the quarter to give the Lady Bulldogs a 15-10 lead heading into the second.
  • The Lady Panthers opened the second quarter with eight unanswered points, taking an 18-15 lead with 8:04 to play in the half. DeShawna Harper ended the near three-minute drought for the Lady Bulldogs with two free throws, however Prairie View responded by outscoring Alabama A&M 10-1 over the next four minutes of play to go up 28-18 with just under three minutes to play. Though the Panthers continued to control momentum, the Lady Bulldogs held the opponents to only two points for the rest of the quarter, going into the locker room trailing 30-22.
  • The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half by scoring on their first possession, and scored minutes later to pull the score to 30-26 with just over seven minutes to play. The Lady Panthers responded with a five-point run of their own to push the lead back to nine, before Cobb made a free throw to make the score 35-27. Minutes later, Alabama A&M found themselves down 11, but pulled back within single digits at 40-31 with three minutes to go in the quarter and scored again at the 1:15 mark on a layup by Nigeria Jones. Following a Panther basket, Jones sank a three to reduce the deficit to six points and the Lady Bulldogs trailed 42-36 heading into the final quarter.
  • Prairie View scored the first basket of the fourth with a three-pointer, however Jones responded with a strong drive and finish plus the foul to put the score at 45-39 with 8:38 remaining. On the next Bulldog possession, Dariauna Lewis scored in the paint to reduce the deficit to four. Minutes later, Prairie View stretched their lead back to four before Lewis made another post finish to make the score 49-45 with 6:45 to go. The Lady Bulldogs got back within three on a free throw with 4:24 remaining, and reduced the deficit to a single point, 49-48, with just over three minutes to go. With just under two minutes to go, Prairie View made a huge three-point basket and followed it with an offensive rebound and put back plus the foul on the next possession to make the score 55-48 with 1:23 left to play. After two free throws by the Panthers, the Lady Bulldogs failed to convert on the offensive end and were forced to foul to extend the game, falling in their final true road test 60-53.
Post-Game Notes

  • The Lady Bulldogs shot 19-for-46 (41.3 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 1-for-10 (10 percent) from the three-point line and 14-for-31 from the charity stripe (45.2 percent).
  • Alabama A&M won the battle of the painted area, outscoring Prairie View 32-20 in the lane during the contest.
  • The Lady Bulldogs were outrebounded by the Lady Panthers in the matchup 34-30. A&M grabbed seven offensive boards for five second chance points, while Prairie View grabbed nine offensive boards for seven second chance points.
  • The Lady Panther bench played a pivotal role in the matchup, outscoring the Lady Bulldog bench 37-15 in the matchup.
  • Turnovers: The turnovers comparison ended near even, as the Lady Bulldogs forced their PVAMU into 20 turnovers and scored 13 points off the miscues. A&M turned the ball over 21 times and allowed 16 points off of their mistakes.
