Women's Basketball Looking to Respond After Tough Road Trip with Final Two Home Games

HUNTSVILLE __ The Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M are returning home after two games in Texas still looking to secure a fourth seed and home court advantage for opening round of SWAC Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs will host Grambling State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and celebrate Senior Night against Jackson State on Saturday scheduled for 4 p.m.


Alabama A&M (14-13, 10-6 SWAC) currently sits fourth in the conference standings and  have played like a top tier team in the SWAC this season, ranking second in total rebounds (39.6) and scoring defense (60.4), while being third in scoring offense (63.3) and scoring margin (2.9). Forward Dariauna Lewis, ranks second in the conference in points per game and third in rebounds with averages of 16.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game on the season. Guard DeShawna Harper ranks seventh in the SWAC in scoring at 13.4 points per contest and third in threes per game at 1.8.


Grambling (4-23, 3-13 SWAC) is coming into Thursday's game after winning their last game, 72-47, over Mississippi Valley State on Monday. The Tigers will face the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Hornets for their last two games of the season, and have four players averaging eight points or more on the year, led by the conference's fourth leading scorer in Justice Coleman, who averages 15 points and is second on the team in rebounds with 4.5 per game. Alabama A&M aims to split the series with Grambling after falling 69-59 in the first conference game of the season.

Jackson State (17-9, 15-1 SWAC) has won three straight and 16 of their last 17 games after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 68-47 on Monday coming into Saturday's matchup. The Lady Tigers lead the SWAC in rebounding, averaging numbers of 43.7 total rebounds, 16.4 offensive rebounds and a 6.4 rebounding margin on the year. They are currently second in the conference in scoring offense per game with 67.5 and scoring margin with a point differential of 4.3 points per contest. Jackson State also touts three of the top 10 scorers in the conference, with Dayzsha Rogan (13.5), Marneisha Hamer (13.4) and Ameshya Williams (11.9) who also ranks second in the SWAC in rebounds at 9.6 per game. The Bulldogs are looking to split the season series between the two programs after falling on the road in Jackson 53-67 earlier in the year.


Bulldog Bites
  • Coach Margaret Richards and her Lady Bulldogs are nearing program milestones including most SWAC wins (13 in 2006-07 season), overall wins (17 in 2011-12) and most Division 1 wins in a season (16 in 2011-12).
  • With a two wins or a Prairie View loss, Alabama A&M will secure a top four seed in this year's SWAC standings, which would allow them to host a game in the opening round in the SWAC Tournament on Tuesday, Mar. 7 in Elmore Gymnasium.
  • With her first rebound on Saturday at Texas Southern, sophomore Dariauna Lewis set a new school single season record for rebounds in a season and currently sits at 248 total rebounds.
  • Lewis currently sits third in the records for points in a season with 464 total points, averaging 16.5 per game.
  • Guard DeShawna Harper continues to move up the three-point rankings, as she has needs eight made threes to break the single season record of 55.

After the two-game home stint, the Lady Bulldogs will play in the opening round matchup of the SWAC Tournament on Tuesday, Mar. 10.
