TOUCHDOWNS, TURNOVERS AND A NEAR COMEBACK
Alabama A&M took an early 14-0 lead through the first four minutes of the second quarter on a pair of eight-yard touchdown grabs by senior wideout
Dee Anderson (Dallas, Texas) before Grambling came roaring back over the next 11 minutes.
The Tigers would force turnovers that led to short fields and setup 24 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead into the break and would extend to a 34-14 advantage late in the third. Undaunted, graduate quarterback
Aqeel Glass (St. Louis, Mo.) led a pair of drives to cut it to 34-28 with more than five and a half minutes to play.
Those featured 81 air yards to junior wide receiver
Odieu Hilaire (Belle Glade, Fla.) on the first drive, including a 66-yard touchdown, and a 13-play, 80-yard drive that capped with another eight-yard TD grab by Anderson. The Bulldogs would be right back in it as junior defensive tackle
Jamal Irby (Mobile, Ala.) hauled in an interception with 2:28 to play.
It was not to be, however, as GSU took the ball right back on an interception, kicking a field goal and salting away the 37-28 victory. The loss snapped a nine-game win streak for AAMU that dated back to November 16, 2019.
WATCH ME NOW (SEASON LONG EDITION)
With the majority of this spring's top performers back in the fold for Fall 2021, all eyes are on A&M. Glass headlines those in the spotlight as he has been named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List representing the top player at the Football Championship Subdivision, the Deacon Jones Watch List as the top player at an HBCU and both the Reese's Senior Bowl and College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).
He is joined by Ibrahim on the Deacon Jones and has also been named a BOXTOROW Preseason All-American and SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. Those pale in comparison, however, to being the first player selected to play in the inaugural HBCU Legacy Bowl, a new postseason All-Star game featuring the top 100 HBCU National Football League (NFL) draft eligible players.
ABOUT THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY TIGERS
