Alabama A&M Finds Their Offense, Cruises Past Mississippi Valley State 93-58

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Solid defense and a balanced offensive attack by Alabama A&M (5-2, 3-2 SWAC) led the way to a 93-58 win over Mississippi Valley State (0-16, 0-8 SWAC) in a NCAA Division I men's basketball game on Saturday, February 6 in Elmore Gymnasium.

 

Freshman guard Jevon Tatum (Snellville, Ga.) led the Bulldogs in the scoring column with 15 points and dished out six assists, while sophomore forward Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a 13-point, 10 rebound double-double on the night. Senior forward Brandon Houston (Birmingham, Ala.) and sophomore guard Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala.) also both scored 13 points, while Hicks added seven assists and two rebounds to his night.

 

Freshman guard Dailin Smith (Colorado Springs, Co.) was the fifth Bulldog in double figures with 12 points and nine rebounds, followed by freshman guard London Riley (Atlanta, Ga.) with nine points and six rebounds and sophomore guard Cameron Tucker (Birmingham, Ala.) who finished with seven points and seven dimes.

 

Following a turnover by the Bulldogs to start the game, the Delta Devils opened play with hot shooting and jumped out to a 10-1 lead with at the 16:33 mark. A&M scored their first field goal on an inside bucket from Johnson on the next possession, and went on to score 16 unanswered points to take a 17-10 lead fueled from a spark of substitutions, including Tatum, who scored eight of his 15 points during the run.

 

After trading baskets and finding the score 21-15 with just under 11 minutes to play, the Bulldogs got hot once again, this time going on a 15-0 run that included threes from Houston, Smith and Tucker, before allowing a dunk by the Delta Devils' Leandre Howard to put the score at 36-17 with 4:53 remaining in the half.

 

A&M continued to stretch their lead through the remainder of the opening frame, only giving up two more points and going into the half leading by 26 at 45-19.

 

The second half was a continuation of dominance for the Bulldogs, as they stretched their lead to 61-29 at the 14:32 mark after back-to-back layups from Riley. Over the next eight minutes, A&M continued to increase their lead, gaining a 39-point advantage after a 9-2 run by Hicks to put the Bulldogs up 79-40.

 

With just over 2:35 to go, the Bulldogs saw their lead at 44, the largest of the game, after another score from Riley put them up 91-47.

 

An 11-point swing from MVSU cut the lead down to 33 with just under a minute to play, however, a final score from Tatum closed out the Bulldogs' the 93-58 win.

 

Caleb Hunter led the Delta Devils with 17 points and five rebounds while Terry Collins added 12 points, five assists and four rebounds. Howard added nine points and five rebounds while Jefferson was just shy of a double-double, finishing with seven points and ten rebounds on the night.

 

Alabama A&M returns to play on Monday, February 8 when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Elmore Gymnasium.
