Alabama A&M Rallies From 3-1 Deficit to Down Jackson State 4-3; Wins Fourth Straight SWAC Match

JACKSON, Miss. – Trailing 3-1, Alabama A&M (4-6, 4-1 SWAC) won the last three singles matches to come from behind and knock off Jackson State (4-5, 2-3 SWAC) by a 4-3 score for their fourth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory in an NCAA Division I men's tennis match on Saturday, March 20.

The Bulldogs would notch an opening win in doubles play at No. 1 as juniors Panji Setiawan (South Jakarta, Indonesia) and Rodrigo Arana Rios (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico) picked up a 6-4 win over Juan Agustin Soria Forcada and Richy Gamo before things turned drastically.

The pairing of Hiromu Ikeda and Agustin Leguizamom would earn a 6-3 decision over senior Fermin Ruiz Crespo (Mollina, Spain) and freshman Divesh Gahlot (Haryana, India) at the three spot before Francisco Vargas and Agustin Agosto came out on top in a marathon 7-6 victory over redshirt-senior Gjorgji Popovski (Skopje, Macedonia) and junior Cheng Yang Chang (Koahsiung, Taiwan) at No. 2.

With the Tigers holding the doubles point, Gahlot would tie it up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Leguizamom before dropping the next two to be on the cusp of their first SWAC loss February 26. Those would take the form of Vargas over Arana Rios by a 6-2, 6-2 score at the top spot and Agosto with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ruiz Crespo at No. 3.

A&M would not go away, however, as Setiawan pulled out a 7-6, 6-3 win over Ikeda at No. 5 and Mulada knotted it up at No. 4 with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Gamo. That would leave it to the No. 2 spot where Forcada took the first set 7-6 before Popovski drove home the 4-3 win for the Bulldogs with 6-4 and 6-0 sets.

Barring any rescheduled contests, Alabama A&M is now set to head to New Orleans for the SWAC Tournament beginning on April 16.
