HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Coming off their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship in program history, Alabama A&M (6-6, 4-1 SWAC) men's tennis will pass another program milestone as they take on No. 3 Tennessee (24-3, 10-2 SEC) in their first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance on Saturday, May 8.
First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Barksdale Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee with the winner facing either Georgia Tech or Memphis, which will face off in the other First Round match.
The Bulldogs enter the postseason having knocked off defending SWAC Champion Alabama State in a thrilling 4-3 victory on Monday, April 19 to claim their first league championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
That win extended their streak to five straight, a stretch that included a 4-3 win over Alcorn State (4/17) in the semifinals, another 4-3 nail biter at Jackson State (3/20), a 4-0 blanking at Prairie View A&M (3/13) and a 4-2 regular season victory over Alcorn (3/12).
Across the net from A&M is one of the best teams in the country in No. 3 Tennessee. They come into the field with a sterling 24-3 overall record that has seen them take down No. 1 Florida (4-3), No. 8 Texas A&M (4-0), No. 12 South Carolina (4-0) and No. 13 Ole Miss (4-1) in their last four. On the season, they have also knocked off No. 3 Texas Christian (4-3 on Feb. 13) and No. 5 Texas (4-2 on Feb. 14) on consecutive days.
