Alabama A&M Falls in Season Opener Against South Alabama

TROY, Ala. – Alabama A&M (0-0, 0-0 SWAC) could not overcome a first half offensive barrage as they dropped an 8-1 decision to 2021 NCAA Tournament team South Alabama (0-0, 0-0 SBC) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, August 20.

The Jaguars wasted no time getting on the score board as Danielle Fuentes found Kate Nicolson who then buried it to back right corner of the goal for a 1-0 margin at the 1:55 mark. Within less than ten minutes they would add to their lead as Abby Jacobs took it herself driving the ball to almost the same spot.

In a lightning quick turnaround USA built on their advantage in a matter of five seconds as Lexi Lloyd-Smith took a feed from Kailey Littleford and proceeded to put it in the back middle of the net for a 3-0 lead. Littleford would play a hand in their final goal of the half, finding Gracie Wilson who then made it a four goal spread with 25:10 gone by. From there the Bulldogs defense held South Alabama scoreless for the remainder of the half to head to the break 4-0.

The Bulldogs came out of the half determined to get on the scoreboard and freshman forward Lauryn Christophe (Conyers, Ga) would connect to the bottom center of the goal at 49:53 and cut it to 4-1. USA would respond within three minutes as a pair of familiar faces connected for the fifth goal as Wilson would assist Nicolson who put the ball into the middle of the goal to push back to a four goal margin by the 52:26 mark.

Thirteen minutes later the Jaguars would increase their lead to 6-1 as Lloyd- Smith hooked up with Morgan White before Nour Imane Addi connected less than four minutes later to extend to a six goal margin. Lloyd-Smith once again assisted her teammates, this time Sydney Ham, who buried the ball to the bottom left of the goal to close out the 8-1 decision.

Christophe lead A&M as she scored the lone goal of the evening, firing off three shots with two on net. Senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) played all 90 minutes making seven saves while allowing eight goals.

Lloyd-Smith fueled the offense for the Jaguars as she dished out a pair of assists while scoring one of her own and Nicolson added two scores. Chipping in with one goal apiece were Addi, Jacobs, Ham, Wilson and White. Luckhardt anchored the defense as she went the distance, allowing only one goal while making one save.

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, August 22 against Troy with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff as they wrap up the Troy Tournament.

NOTES
Slated for a 4 p.m. kick the game was delayed by approximately an hour and fifteen minutes due to lightning in the area.
