HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M men's basketball junior forward
Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been named to the 2021-22 Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List as announced by that organization on Wednesday, January 12.
The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball and honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Individuals eligible for this award hail from 21 conferences including America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast.
Johnson is in select company with just 41 student-athletes selected nationwide and only one of four individuals from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The latter group includes Jackson State's Jayveous McKinnis and Florida A&M's MJ Randolph representing the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with the only other such honoree being Joe Bryant Jr. from Norfolk State.
He was chosen for this prestigious honor due to his stellar performances thus far, starting all 14 games and leading the Bulldogs with averages of 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds. Additionally, he's reached double digits in scoring in 12 games with a career high of 30 alongside seven rebounds at Cincinnati (11/16/21). On top of that he registered three double-doubles on his way to ranking fourth (.453) in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage within the SWAC.
