HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite battling through Day 1 darkness and tournament shortening fog, junior
Felipe Gomez Lopez (Bogota, Columbia) anchored a tremendous performance as the Bulldogs tied for second at the Alabama A&M Golf Classic on Tuesday, November 1.
Facing darkness after a long opening round, play was suspended in Round 2 with the plan to finish those holes and the final 18 on the second day. However, heavy fog derailed those plans in the morning and forced the shortening of the tournament to 36 holes.
Playing through those adversities, Gomez Lopez fired what is believed to be one of the lowest scores in program history with a 66 over the first 18 holes before following that up with a second round 73. His total of 139 was good for runner-up honors (2-of-55) and helped A&M secure a three-way tie for second with Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama State, all at 589.
Also aiding in that effort were graduate
Jason Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), who fired a 70-77-147 to tie for 12
th, and Niall Bagnall, who shot a 77-74-151 for a 27
th place finish to round out the top performers.
Claiming the tournament title would be Lehigh with a 557 with Evansville (593) bookending UAPB, the Bulldogs and ASU in the top five.
Alabama A&M is now off for two weeks before heading to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Invitational from November 15-16. Hosted by the league, that tournament will be held at Robert Trent Jones Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham, Alabama and close out the fall portion of the season.
