HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Two rivals will run it back one more time as No. 8 Seed Alabama A&M (7-25, 6-10 SWAC) takes on top-seeded league champion No. 1 Seed Alabama State (18-11, 15-1 SWAC) in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament on Friday, November 18. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. in Houston, Texas on the campus of Texas Southern. The winner of that match will face either No. 4S Jackson State or No. 5S TSU at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19.
A&M returns to the tournament for the first time since Fall 2019 after not competing in Spring 2021 and falling short a year ago. They closed the regular season with four straight losses following a three-match winning streak. At the opposite end of the spectrum, ASU claimed the SWAC regular season title following a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs on Friday, November 11. They enter the tournament with a 13-match win streak, unseating defending league champion Florida A&M in the process.
All-Time Series
A good rivalry is generally bred from proximity and success by both teams and that is exactly what the series history between these two teams has. Alabama State leads the series, which dates back to at least October 11, 2005, by a narrow 20-17 margin.
The Bulldogs hold the longest win streak in series history with 14 straight from that first meeting through November 6, 2012 while ASU's longest is six consecutive from November 6, 2015 through November 2, 2017. Earlier this year the Hornets notched a 3-1 victory in Montgomery on October 20 and matched that in Huntsville on November 11.
