HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | A first-half goal by
Chelsie Charles proved to be the game-winner as the Alabama A&M University women's soccer team advances to the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over rival Alabama State on Friday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
Alabama A&M (3-15, 3-6 SWAC) needed just a tie on Friday to reach the postseason tournament. With the victory, the Bulldogs will enter tourney play as the No. 8 seed and will meet top seed and conference regular season champion Grambling State on Thursday at Prairie View A&M. A time for the tournament game will be announced at a later date.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the 28
th minute as Charles scored of an assist by
Jasmine Perez-Acosta.
Alabama State's best opportunity came in the 69
th minute on a penalty kick. However the Hornets (2-12-3, 1-6-2) could not get the ball past AAMU goalkeeper
Liliana Ribeiro.
