Simmons and Turner Lead AAMU to Second Consecutive Win

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | With the performances from Amiah Simmons's 19 points and Kaylah Turner's 16 points, the Alabama A&M University women's basketball team pulled away with a 25-point fourth quarter to rout UAH, 74-44, as the Bulldogs won their second consecutive game on Tuesday night at the AAMU Event Center.
 
The Bulldogs (2-2) led by 10 entering the final quarter and outscored the Chargers, 25-5, to turn a close game into a blowout victory for the second straight home win as Alabama A&M extended its program-best victory to 11 straight wins at the AAMU Event Center.

Simmons paced the Bulldogs with a season-high 19 points, along with five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Kaylah Turner registered 16 points shooting 7-of-7 from the field, with four assists and three steals. Alisha Wilson tallied 11 points, two rebounds and one steal.
 
Andie Flatgard recorded a team-high 13 points, going 5-of-10 from the floor, to lead UAH (1-2).  Haelim Adle tallied 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M raced out to a 9-4 advantage after a Kailyn Nash jumper with 5:46 remaining in the opening quarter and took a 15-8 lead into the second period.

The Chargers cut the lead to four, 18-14, after a bucket by  Elyse Hughes with 6:53 left in the half.

Alabama A&M stretched its lead to 29-14 off a 3-pointer and two free throws from Simmons with just over three minutes remaining.

The advantage continued to grow as Chynell Mitchell drained a jumper, pushing the margin to 35-17 with 1:30 left.

UAH closed the gap to 35-19 right before the break-off of a bucket by Flatgard.

The Chargers, who shot 50 percenter (7-of-14) from the field in the third quarter, cut the deficit to 47-39 after a jumper by Flatgard with 1:24 remaining in the period.

However, a steal by Darin Burgin, followed by a jumper by Turner sent the Bulldogs into the fourth with a 49-39 advantage.

The Bulldogs took control at the beginning of the final period with a 17-2 run, capped by a bucket by Wilson as Alabama A&M stretched the margin to 66-41 with 4:18 remaining.

UAH could not recover down the stretch, allowing Alabama A&M to pick up the home victory.

  • Alabama A&M shot 62 percent (31-of-50) from the floor and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the charity stripe
  • The Bulldogs registered 33 boards, with nine coming on the offensive glass
