Women's Basketball Earns First Home Win as Bulldogs Hold Off Roos

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M women's basketball team earned their first home victory on Tuesday afternoon, after routing the Roos of Kansas City 57-52.  
 

The contest was attended by over 1,000 elementary school students for Education Day. Lauryn Pendleton recorded 15 points and two steals. Kourtney Rittenberry tallied 13 points and one block, while Jaiyah Harris led the team with three assists. Mailyn Wilkerson totaled 12 points on the night, going four of nine from beyond the arc. Alisha Wilson paced the Bulldog defense, grabbing 12 rebounds and one block.  
 

Alayna Contreras paced the Roos with 12 points and two steals. Elauni Bennett led Kansas City with seven rebounds in addition to her 11 points. Though Ana Oliveira fouled out, she led the team with three assists and four blocks. The Roos and Bulldogs are now 1-1 in their all-time series, and Kansas City is now 9-4 in contests against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponents.  
 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • The Bulldogs were first to get on the board, the Roos led by one point entering the first media timeout.  

  • Roos took a three-point lead but a shot clock violation gave AAMU the boost they needed to take the lead at the end of the first quarter (13-12) 

  • The Bulldogs opened the second frame with eight straight points, courtesy of a three-pointer from Mailyn Wilkerson and Nyla Allen (21-12) 

  • Kansas City reduced the lead to four, but another three pointer from Wilkerson and Jumper from Sanders extended the lead to seven (24-17) 

  • Both teams scored once more but AAMU entered the break with the lead, 26-21 

  • The third quarter saw a more intense pace, and the Roos reduced the Bulldog lead to four (31-27) 

  • A three pointer from Contreras brought Kansas City within three with two and a half minutes left to play in the stanza 

  • A pair of jumpers from the Roos gave them the slim lead at 36-35, but Lauryn Pendleton claimed the lead for AAMU after a pair of made free throws to end the frame 

  • A back-to-back three-pointer a piece from Rittenberry and Wilkerson put the Bulldogs ahead five to force the Roos to request a stoppage (43-38) 

  • Lauryn Pendleton knocked down a three-pointer from the far-right corner to extend the Bulldog lead to eight points at 49-41 

  • AAMU held a 10-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the game 
     

GAME NOTES  

  • Alabama A&M shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free-throw line 

  • AAMU went 9-26 (34.6 percent) from behind the arc 

  • The Bulldogs grabbed 34 total rebounds, 16 offensive and 18 defensive 

  • Kourtney Rittenberry tallied 13 points and one block, while Jaiyah Harris led the team with three assists. 

  • Mailyn Wilkerson totaled 12 points on the night, going four of nine from beyond the arc   

  • Alisha Wilson paced the Bulldog defense, grabbing 12 rebounds and one block 

  • The Bulldogs finished with 26 bench points, 20 points in the paint, seven fast break points and 13 second chance points  

  • The Maroon and White scored 20 points off 21 Kansas City turnovers 

  • The Roos shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the field, 45 percent from the line (9-20) and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from behind the arc 

  • Kansas City grabbed 35 rebounds 

  • Alayna Contreras paced the Roos with 12 points and two steals  

  • Elauni Bennett led Kansas City with seven rebounds in addition to her 11 points 

  • Though Ana Oliveira fouled out, she led the team with three assists and four blocks 

  • The Roos' largest lead was three points, compared to the 10-point lead from AAMU
