GRAMBLING, La. | Omari Peek and
Cameron Tucker accounted for 28 points as the Alabama A&M University men's basketball team got back into the win column on Monday night as the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to defeat Grambling State, 60-50, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Alabama A&M (6-18 overall, 5-6 SWAC) erased an early eight-point deficit and used a 10-4 run to close out the first half as the Bulldogs never let the lead disappear in the second half. Grambling State (11-13, 8-3) suffered through a seven-minute scoreless drought in the first half and could not recover from a poor shooting performance in suffering its third home defeat of the season.
Peek recorded 14 points and five rebounds, while Tucker added 14 points, five boards, one assist, one steal and one block.
Chad Moodie came off the bench to provide a double-double of a career-high 12 rebounds and 11 points.
Kintavious Dozer was the lone GSU player in double figures, with 11 points, five rebounds and one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State jumped out to a 10-2 lead, capped by a pair of free throws by Smith, with exactly 17 minutes to play in the half
- Alabama A&M took advantage of GSU's seven-minute scoreless drought by using an 8-0 run, tying the game at 10 after a jumper by Jayland Randall with 10:38 remaining
- The Tigers pushed the lead to 19-14 after a Terrence Lewis layup, but back came the Bulldogs as William Tavares scored on a layup, tying the game at 19 with just over four minutes to play
- Alabama A&M used a 10-4 run during the final four minutes as the Bulldogs took a 29-23 lead into the break
- AAMU stretched the advantage to 36-25 after a Tucker pull-up jumper with 17:23 remaining
- The Bulldogs continued to extend the lead, pushing the margin to 42-29 after a jumper by Chad Moodie with just over 11 minutes to play
- Grambling State cut the deficit to 43-34 after a Jalen Johnson bucket with 8:33 left, but back came AAMU as Tucker scored on a layup, pushing the lead back to double digits, 47-35, with just over five minutes remaining
- The Tigers closed the gap to 51-43 after a Jalen Johnson free throw with 2:37 left
- A dunk by Moodie with 1:53 left gave Alabama A&M a 55-44 advantage and Grambling State could not recover down the stretch
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) and 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the free-throw line
- The Bulldogs grabbed 56 rebounds, including 20 on the offensive glass
- Omari Peek recorded 14 points and five rebounds
