AAMU Can’t Overcome Big Second Quarter

GRAMBLING, La. | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team went cold from the floor for more than six minutes as Grambling State built a double-digit lead and did not look back in a 69-52 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory on Monday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
Alabama A&M (10-13 overall, 5-6 SWAC) got out of the gate slowly, but pulled within four minutes early in the second period. However, Grambling State (14-8, 8-3) used a 19-2 run during a six-minute stretch in the quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs.
 
Darian Burgin paced three Bulldog players in double figures with 13 points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals. Kaylah Turner and Victoria Dixon each recorded 10 points, while Alisha Wilson grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
DeMya Young led the Tigers with 17 points, four boards, two steals and one assist. Kahia Warmsley chipped in 14 points, five assists, four steals and one board, while Anijah Grant grabbed 12 boards.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grambling State raced out to an 11-3 advantage after a triple by Young with just over six minutes to play in the opening quarter
  • The Bulldogs got buckets by Dixon and Amiah Simmons, closing the gap to 11-7, with 3:56 left
  • A layup by Arianna Mosley sent GSU into the second period with a 13-7 lead
  • Alabama A&M got a jumper by Burgin just 21 seconds into the second quarter, closing the gap to 13-9
  • However, the Bulldogs went cold from the floor for the next six-plus minutes as the Tigers built a 30-9 lead after a pair of Zayla Tinner free throws with 3:42 remaining
  • Grambling State outscored AAMU, 26-6, in the quarter and took a 39-313 advantage into the break 
  • The Tigers stretched the lead to 42-14 after a free throw by Douthsine Prien with 8:44 left in the third
  • Alabama A&M could not recover from the huge deficit in dropping the road tilt 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M shot 30.0 percent (18-of-60) and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the free-throw line
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 46 rebounds, including 21 on the offensive glass
  • Darian Burgin registers 13 points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals
  • Kaylah Turner and Victoria Dixon each recorded 10 points
  • Alisha Wilson grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
  • The Bulldogs finished with 16 points in the paint, 16 points off 18 GSU turnovers, 15 second-chance points, 14 bench points and four fastbreak points
  • Grambling State went 27-of-62 shooting (43.5 percent) and 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the foul line
  • The Tigers grabbed 37 rebounds, with 25 coming on the defensive glass
