Bulldogs Sweep Devilettes to Win Series

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University softball team completed a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State, 7-0 and 14-13, on Saturday to win the series at the Bulldog Softball Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
Alabama A&M (7-19 overall, 3-11 SWAC) did all its damage in the first four innings and never looked back.
 
The Bulldogs plated one run in the first inning, before exploding for three runs in the second.
 
With one out in the frame, Iyanna Canada reached on an infield hit before stealing second and third. A Callia Rooks ground out plated Canada from third. Dakota Daniel reached on an infield hit and stole second and third, before a Serena Herbranson double to left center plated Daniel. Madison Murray reached on an error as Herbranson scored, giving AAMU a commanding 4-0 lead.
 
The Bulldogs added two runs in the third and one more in the fourth for the 7-0 lead.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with seven runs on 14 hits, committed four errors and left seven on base
  • Dakota Daniel went 3-for-4, with two runs scored
  • Serena Herbranson went 3-for-3, with two RBI and two runs scored
  • Katie Puckett, Iyanna Canada and Allyson Riches each collected two hits
  • Paige Scott (3-5) earned the victory, scattering three hits, fanning seven and walking two in seven innings
  • Mississippi Valley State finished with three hits, one error and stranded seven on base
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Alabama A&M fell behind 8-3 after two innings and used a five-run third to tie the game at 8, before scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and held off a late rally for the 14-13 win.
 
Mississippi Valley State used a seven-run second inning to take an 8-1 lead, before AAMU responded with a pair of runs. 
 
Alabama A&M tied the game at 8 with five runs on four hits and took advantage of one error in the third, but MVSU responded with a pair of runs in the fourth for a 10-8 lead.
 
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth.
 
Faith Cross walked to open the frame and moved to third on a ground out. Zahria Jones reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a stolen base. Iyanna Canada followed and reached on an error as Cross and Jones scored. Callia Rooks brought Canada across on a sac bunt as Alabama A&M grabbed the lead.
 
AAMU added three more runs, including a solo homer by Jones, in the fifth for a 14-10 lead, but MVSU rallied in the seventh with three runs, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs completed the doubleheader sweep.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M finished with 14 runs on 14 hits, had four errors and stranded seven on base
  • Dakota Daniel went 5-for-5, with one RBI
  • Zahria Jones went 3-for-4, with four runs driven in and four runs scored
  • Faith Cross went 2-for-3, with three runs scored and a pair of RBI
  • Madison Murray went 2-for-4, with two runs scored and one RBI
  • Sydney Hall started and lasted one inning, surrendering six runs (five earned) on three hits, with three walks and one strikeout
  • Paige Scott earned the win in 5.2 innings, while Cris'Deona Beasley picked up her first save
  • Mississippi Valley State finished with 13 runs on 11 hits, committed three errors and left seven on base 
UP NEXT  
Alabama A&M returns to the road and opens a three-game SWAC series starting on Friday with a doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 12 p.m.
