HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | For Alabama A&M freshman Jaliyah Grigsby, she's making every moment count in her journey here on the HIll.Â
Grigsby's transition from high school to college softball has been a learning experience defined by growth, discipline, and adjustment. The game she once played freely now demands a higher level of commitment, something she quickly embraced.
That shift hasn't just been physical, it's been mental as well. Like many freshmen, Grigsby has had to adjust to balancing academics, athletics, and personal well-being. Time management and mental health quickly became two of the biggest areas she's had to navigate during her first year.
Despite the challenges, one thing made the transition easier: her teammates.
"They've been the best part," Grigsby said. "If I didn't have them, the shift wouldn't have been as easy… we're close, like a sisterhood."Â
That sense of connection has made wearing the Bulldog uniform even more meaningful. After being recruited late in her senior year, simply having the opportunity to represent Alabama A&M is something she holds close.
One moment that stands out to Grigsby this season wasn't just about the final score,it was about the feeling. In a game where the Bulldogs made key adjustments, everything seemed to click. The energy shifted, the team came together, and the result reflected it.
On the field, Grigsby has already seen noticeable improvement in her game. She points to her hitting and increased aggressiveness as areas where she's grown the most. Off the field, she's developed better habits, learning how to navigate the structure of a full school day while staying locked in on her responsibilities.
Looking ahead, her focus remains on development, both physically and mentally. Strength and conditioning have become a priority as she works to stay healthy and build longevity in her career.
"I'm working on strengthening my body… just making sure I'm putting myself first when it comes to softball," she said.Â
Even as the college game has introduced a new level of intensity, Grigsby still enjoys the small moments like diving drills, which remain her favorite part of practice.Â
As her freshman season comes to an end, Grigsby's goals extend beyond the field. She's focused on maintaining balance by excelling in the classroom, building relationships across campus, and continuing to grow as both a student and athlete.
Beyond softball, Grigsby has her sights set on a future in healthcare. She plans to become a labor and delivery nurse and is looking forward to gaining hands-on experience through internships in the coming years.
For now, her focus remains on embracing the process of learning, growing, and representing Alabama A&M with pride.
