ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team opened its final Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road series on Friday night with a 12-2 loss in seven innings to Mississippi Valley State at Magnolia Field.
Alabama A&M entered the weekend series five games back of the fourth spot, held by Jackson State, with six games remaining in the regular season. Both teams dropped games on Friday as the Tigers fell to Bethune-Cookman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mississippi Valley State (10-31 overall, 2-23 SWAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a pair of runs in the second inning and extended the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the third.
Alabama A&M (12-35, 8-17) got a run back in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by
Jared Tribett.
However, the Delta Devils plated three runs in the bottom of the frame, stretching their advantage to 9-1.
The Bulldogs closed the gap to 9-2 with a run in the sixth.
Tristian Curless reached on an error to begin the frame and advanced to third on a flyout by Tribett.
Zak Rice followed and singled to center, scoring Curless.
Back came MVSU in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times in extending its lead to 12-2.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with two runs on four hits, with one error and stranded six on base
- Brycen Hammonds, Jared Tribett, Zak Rice and Miles Jackson each collected one hit
- Anthony Mateo (1-7) surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, fanned two and walked one in 3.0 innings to take the loss
- Charlie Lazo worked the final three innings in relief
- Mississippi Valley State finished with 12 runs on 13 hits, committed two errors and left three on base
- Ty Washington went 3-for-3, with one walk, three runs scored and two RBI
- Benny Hernandez went 2-for-3, with two runs scored and a pair of RBI
- Dreylin Holmes collected two hits, scored twice and drove in one
- James Snipes (1-4) picked up the complete-game victory, giving up two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one in seven innings.
