Bulldogs Drop Five-Set Match to West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga | After a hard fought two-and-a-half-hour match, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-6) fell the University of West Georgia Wolves (5-2) in five sets, 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 25-23, 10-15. 
 

Both Saldy Amparo-Smith and Fatima Ramirez led both teams in kills, with 23 and 20 respectively. Amparo-Smith also notched the most blocks of the team, with seven, and picked up ten balls from the floor. Ramirez tied with Michell Jerez for most digs for the Bulldogs, with 15 a piece. Junior Kemora Coachman tabbed 4 aces and 3 blocks.  
 

The Wolves were paced by Callaway Cason with 52 assists, and Zoe LaBreche with 19 digs. AAMU had their best hitting percentage in the fourth set, with a .297% compared to UWG's .209%.  
 

The Bulldogs look to travel to Abilene, Texas for the Wildcat Classic, where they will face Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian on September 19th.  
 

Set One  

Alabama A&M would start the match out strong with 3 unanswered points thanks to kills from Amparo-Smith and Ramirez. West Georgia would tie the match at 3-3. Both teams would battle for points before the Wolves would pull ahead by five. The Bulldogs would notch two more points but UWG would still be ahead, 17-10. Alabama A&M would score five straight points to cut the lead to 15-17. The Wolves would extend the lead back to four, but it would not last, as AAMU would square the match at 19-19. The match would be leveled at 23 all and UWG would call a timeout before scoring three-straight to claim the set, 25-23. 

 

Set Two

West Georgia would control most of the second set, starting the frame with three consecutive points and taking an early lead at 9-5. The Wolves would have their largest lead of the match in the second set, at 18-7. The Bulldogs would nab five of the next 6 points, but UWG would ultimately claim the set 25-15. 
 

  

Set Three

The third set would start much like the first, with both teams going on short runs to tie the match. Freshman Nhya Morgan would hammer the ball down the middle to put the Bulldogs ahead at 6-5. Junior Laela Price would record two consecutive aces to force a UWG timeout at 8-5. West Georgia would claim three balls out of the timeout to tie the match once again. Both teams would battle for points, with AAMU leading by two for most of that time. West Georgia would tally a pair of kills and a pair of aces to get control of the match at 19-17. The Bulldogs would claim six more points to get within two of the set. AAMU would get to set point first, but the Wolves would level the match at 24. Ramirez would terminate the ball at 25-24 and an ace would give the Bulldogs the set, 26-24.  
 

Set Four

On brand with the tone of the match, the fourth frame would be competitive on both sides of the ball. The match would tie at 7-7, at 12-12, and again at 15-15. Three straights kills from Ramirez and Amparo-Smith would force a West Georgia timeout at 18-15. Another Wolves termination and service ace would bring them within one of the Bulldogs at 20-19, but the Bulldogs would get to set point first, thanks to two kills from Amparo-Smith. A monster block from Morgan and Alyssa Williams would solidify the set for Alabama A&M, 25-23, and level the match at 2-2.  
 

Set Five

The Bulldogs would capitalize on West Georgia errors to tie the match early at 4-4. The Wolves would score three straight to force and AAMU timeout, but it would not stop their momentum, as they tallied three more points to balloon their lead, 10-4. Alabama A&M would claim four of the next five points to prompt an UWG stoppage at 11-8. The Wolves would nab three more to get within one of the set. The Bulldogs battled through the first set point, but West Georgia would claim the set 15-10, and the match, 3-2.
