THE HILL | In a home opener marred with rain, wind and weather delays, the Alabama A&M women's soccer team (1-4-0) would notch their first win of the season against the University of Georgia Wolves (0-4-0).
The Bulldogs were first to score, when freshman Anita Frederick-Sigaran found senior Jasmine Perez-Acosta who sent the ball into the lower right corner of the net in the 14th minute. The match would find itself at a standstill, with the first weather delay stopping the match for 30 minutes. The match would resume once more, but a lightning threat within radius would pause the match for over an hour, with 17 minutes of play remaining in the half.
After a short warm-up period, the match resumed, and two minutes later, the Wolves took advantage of the restart and leveled the match at 1-1, entering halftime.
The Bulldogs would take the early lead again, when in the 47th minute, Frederick-Sigaran would find the back of the net herself, making the score 2-1. Not going down without a fight, UWG would tally an equalizer from Victoria Grant in the 54th minute.
With the 90th minute of the match approaching, both teams were eager to walk away with their first win of the season. AAMU would be the team to strike, as Frederick-Sigaran would find yet another teammate to notch a goal. This time, it was junior Taylor McNeal in the 83rd minute via corner kick.
AAMU head coach Prince Borde was proud of the effort the team put forth through all the obstacles they faced. "We fought extremely hard through adversity and the players played hard," he said. "There were two lightning delays. West Georgia played extremely well, so this was a massive win today." He is looking forward to another competitive match on The Hill. "Now we on to another big home game against Middle Tennessee", he said.
The match is set for 3 pm (CT) on Thursday, September 5th at the Bulldog Soccer Field. The match is free to the public.
