Soccer to Open SWAC Play at Merrimack Park on Friday

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's soccer team (2-7) will open SWAC play at home versus Grambling State University (2-6-3) on Friday at 1 pm at Merrimack Soccer Complex. Match time has been moved up to 1 p.m. and will be played on Field 15. The address for the park is 3501 Triana Blvd SW, Huntsville, AL 35805. More information on Merrimack Soccer Complex, including hours and a map for instructions can be found here

The Bulldogs look to start the new season after going 2-7 during the non-conference slate, most recently falling 2-1 to Charleston Southern University. Senior Jasmine Perez-Acosta was the lone scorer in the match, when Freshman Alicia Cohen found her in the fourth minute. She is now the team's leading scorer and has the most shots on goal so far this season with 13.

The Tigers enter the 2024 season fresh off a 2023 campaign that saw them win the SWAC Tournament and go unbeaten in conference play. GSU finished last season 15-5-4 overall and 8-0-1 in the SWAC. They were picked to finish first in the preseason poll with 164 points and 10 first place votes. So far this season, the Tigers have won two matches, including their season opener against LSU Alexandria, and Nicholls University.

The theme for the match is Luau Day and fans are encouraged to wear their best tropical outfits. Restroom facilities are at the north and south ends of the complex at Merrimack Park. There is a no pets policy, except for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) service animals.

The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against GSU, 13-11. Their most recent match-ups, however, resulted in a Tigers victory. The teams faced off twice last season, first in October and again during the SWAC Tournament, where the Tigers claimed both matches 4-0, 3-0, respectively.
