Martinez Paces Offense as AAMU Sets Attendance Record

THE HILL | Nisaan Martinez registered a match-high 17 kills as the Alabama A&M University volleyball team set a new HBCU volleyball attendance record on Wednesday night, but Alabama State completed a season sweep of the Bulldogs, 3-1, Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
 
Alabama A&M shattered the HBCU volleyball attendance mark with 1,859, breaking the previously record of 1,488 previously set by Savannah State on October 2. In addition, the Bulldogs notched the largest attended volleyball match inside Elmore Gymnasium of 756 set in 2018 versus Alabama State.
 
Alabama A&M took the opening set 25-19, but Alabama State answered in the second set with a 25-17 win. The Hornets held on for a 25-23 victory in the third set and completed the season sweep with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
 
Alabama A&M (14-7 overall, 5-3 SWAC) finished with 51 kills, 74 digs, 47 assists, four service aces and 1.0 total team blocks.
 
Martinez hit .348 in four sets, finishing with 19 kills and one dig to lead the Bulldogs. Fatima Ramirez added 15 digs, nine kills, two service aces and one block solo, while Rayishon Jackman, the SWAC Newcomer of the Week, tallied a match-high 19 digs and eight kills. Briana Smith and Kaydee Smith dished out 34 and 13 assists, respectively, while Kelani Talakai posted 34 digs.  
 
Alabama State (7-13, 6-2) finished with 54 kills, 77 digs, 45 assists, 8.0 total team blocks and five service aces.
 
Camille Holloway and Jyriah Morgan paced the Hornets offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Kamrynn Clay posted a double-double of 37 assists and 12 digs. Taylor Williams led ASU with 18 digs, while Sierra Scanlan and Brooke Adams added 15 and 13 digs each.

Alabama A&M returns to action on Sunday against Prairie View A&M. First serve against the Panthers is set for 12 p.m. from T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
